Cordyceps Sinensis

Cordyceps Sinensis: A study has examined the effects of Cs-4 (Cordyceps Sinensis) on the physical performance of healthy elderly people. Twenty elderly (50-75 years of age), healthy subjects were recruited for this full blind study, which was controlled by placebos. The subjects either took capsules of 333 mg of Cs-4 or placebo capsules three times a day over a course of 12 weeks. The subjects underwent the basic medical check-up including physical performance and laboratory tests. An additional maximum performance study was realized on a stationary ergometer by analyzing the respiration at the beginning and end of the exercise. After taking Cs-4 for 12 weeks, the metabolic threshold was increased by 10,5% and the respiratory threshold was increased by 8,5%. There weren’t any significant changes in the respiratory threshold for the subjects of the placebo group after 12 weeks.   

This pilot study suggests that taking supplements of Cs-4 (Cordyceps Sinensis) improves physical performance and could contribute to the well-being of healthy elderly people.

An experience has examined the effects of the Cordyceps Sinensis extract (CSE) on mice, which were aged by d-galactose, and on castrated rats in order to analyze the anti-ageing effects of CSE. In a water labyrinth, avoiding type step-down tests were used to examine the effect of CST (Cordyceps sinensis Mycellium) on learning and memory.

CSE shortens the step-down latency and decreases errors of aged mice. The effect of CST on castrated rats was evaluated by measuring the penis erection latency time and the ejaculation latency.

CSE seems to reduce the penis erection latency time for castrated rats. The study has also measured the effect of CST on age-linked enzyme activity. The results have shown that CST indeed improves the activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase and that it lowers the lipid peroxidation level and monoamine oxidase activity of aged mice. 

The study has shown that CST can improve the cerebral function and activity of antioxidant enzymes of mice which were aged by d-galactose and that it can also promote the sexual function of castrated rats.

All these results suggest that CST has an anti-ageing effect.
